Dermatofibroma is the condition in which harmless skin growth is take place, specially on the legs and arms. It is also known as histiocytoma, sclerosing hemangioma. The size is from about 0.5 to 1 cm. Dermatofibromas are circular spots occurs in variety of colors usually in brownish. Dermatofibroma mostly found in women and the ratio of male to women is about 1:4. Dermatofibroma is nothing but a tumor which is composed of spindle cells arranged in a storiform. It will not turn into cancer.
Dermatofibroma is basically a skin disease typical to youth, but Dermatofibroma may occur to the people at any age. It generally found in adults.
Typical dermatofibromas cause little or no discomfort, although itching and tenderness can occur. They can be pink, gray, red or brown in color and may change color over the years.
Causes of Dermatofibroma
- Minor injury like insect bite or a prick of a thorn to the skin is one of the cause of dermatofibroma.
- It can be inherited form family to family.
- Because of its persistent nature the exact cause of the dermatofibroma is unknown.
- Generally womens are mostly responsible to develop dermatofibroma.
- It mainly cause in middle aged adults than children.
What are the symptoms of Dermatofibroma?
- Dermatofibroma is nothing but the occurrence of nodules on the skin mainly on leg part. Commonly they are in yellow-brown colour, sometimes quite dark.
- These nodules are small in size.
- Patient feel itchy or sensitive.
- These nodules are often painless but may be tender.
Dermatofibroma Treatment
- Dermatofibromas will never turn into cancer that's why best ignored.
- Dermatofibromas do not go away by themselves.
- The growth of nodules can be stop by using intralesional steroid injections.
- Freezing is another technique in which liquid nitrogen is used to clear lumps but it rarely successful.
- When a dermatofibroma gets in the way of shaving or is irritated by clothing, it can be flattened by freezing with liquid nitrogen
- It can also remove by surgical method but it usually leaves scar on the skin.
- We may also use cryosurgery to remove nodules in dermatofibromas.
