Darier's Disease - Symptoms and Treatment of Darier's Disease

Darier's disease is discovered by French dermatologist Darier Jean Ferdinand which is a genetic disorder. In this disease there are crusty patches occurs on the skin, sometimes these patches may contain pus. These crusty patches are known as keratotic papules and also known as keratosis follicularisis. Darier's disease affects both men & women. It is not catching or due to an allergy, it runs in certain families.

Darier's disease is hereditary and dominant. This disease may occur during or later than the teenage years. The disease affects the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, which thickens around the hair follicles.

Causes of Dariers Disease

  • The main cause of this disease is abnormality in the gene, environmental factors, heat, humidity, and exposure to sunlight
  • And the other main cause of this disease is because of the disturbance in the way of the skin cells that are joined together.
  • This disease inherited from family to family, there are 50% chance that each child of an affected parents may inherit the problem.
  • In summer a red eruption of the skin occurs due to heat & humidity.

What are the symptoms of Dariers Disease?

  • In this case the skin get injured & leads to occur over the oily areas of the skin like scalp margins, forehead, ears, around the nostrils and the sides of nose, eyebrows etc.
  • Some common features of this disease are itching, little brownish, rough-topped bumps may develop on the skin. And also small pits occur on the palms of the hands & the soles of the feet.
  • In dariers disease an unpleasant smell may occur from patient.
  • The ducts of the salivary glands in the cheeks may be obstructed, resulting in acute swelling of the parotid gland.

Dariers Disease Treatment

  • The main treatment of the dariers disease is protection from the heat or sunlight. For that we must have to use moisturizers with urea or lactic acid can reduce scaling and hyperkeratosis.
  • Properly during summer it is necessary to use sunscreen, cool clothing & avoidance of hot environments which helps to protect from heat.
  • There are some surgical methods available such as electro surgery, micrographic surgery and another is dermabrasion.
  • There is no medical cure for dariers disease but drug like accutane may be useful.
