Atopic Dermatitis - Symptoms and Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic Dermatitis also known as eczema, atopic eczema is a chronic skin infection due to an allergen or an irritant resulting into red, thick, dry and itchy skin on face, arms, knees and elbows. Atopic Dermatitis is commonly found in kids but can continue to until their adulthood. But it can occur to anybody. It is non contagious.
Majority of people living in dry climate cities are suffering from this disease. It can occur to both males and females.
Atopic dermatitis may also affect the skin around the eyes, the eyelids, and the eyebrows and lashes. Scratching and rubbing the eye area can cause the skin to redden and swell. Scratching and rubbing in response to itching irritates the skin, increases inflammation, and actually increases itchiness.
Causes of Atopic Dermatitis
- Exact cause is unknown but possibility is the combination of hereditary factors such as asthma or hay fever and environmental factors.
- Abnormal function of immune system can lead to atopic dermatitis.
- Irritants like soaps and cleaners, cigarette smoke, chlorine, dust etc can bring this disease.
- Allergens such as eggs, mold, milk etc can also be the responsible factors.
- Some common factors such as indoor air pollution, tobacco smoke, perfumes, heating devices etc are also responsible.
- Due to some emotional factors such as stress, frustration, anger the situation becomes worst.
What are the symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis ?
- Skin becomes red, itchy, scaly and dry.
- Ear leak and bleeding may happen in some cases.
- Small bumps on cheeks, forehead, or scalp may be found.
- Rashes can appear on the arms, legs and trunks.
- Red, crusted and open spots may seen in some cases.
- Folding of skin under the eyes.
Atopic Dermatitis Treatment
Usually treatment is based on age, symptoms, and general health.
- Corticosteroid creams or ointments are used to control swelling and allergic reactions.
- Oral antihistamines are useful to minimize the itching.
- Immuno-modulators such as tacrolimus ointment and pimecrolimus cream can help in controlling inflammation and also to reduce immune system reactions.
- Oral or topical antibiotics may be recommended in some cases.
- Phototherapy or ultra violet light treatment is another option to treat the disease.
