Morning Sickness
Morning sickness is a presumptive sign for women who are suspected to be pregnant. This can be a cause of hormonal changes if the client confirmed to be pregnant. This is called morning sickness because it occurs during the early morning upon waking up. Sometimes, it has several effects that can no longer tolerate by the patient leading to hospitalization. Several ways to prevent this can be either pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic.
The manifestations of morning sickness are nausea and vomiting; for severe vomiting this is known as hyper emesis gravid arum. Other symptoms are dizziness, irritability and urinary frequency. Due to this manifestation the client become restless and for others they cannot manage the effect of morning sickness. This can occur during the first trimester of pregnancy and disappears when second trimester start. To manage the manifestations some of the home remedies are:
Maintain bed rest - when waking up do not force yourself to stand, therefore maintain on bed at least one hour then slowly turn at your right side or left side after turning slowly rise from the bed and sit for at least another fifteen minutes before totally getting out from the bed.
Drink fluid - drink fresh juice or warm water to enhance glucose and drive away hypoglycemia to decrease the experience of nausea. Do not force yourself to drink if you are nauseated and continue to vomit because electrolytes imbalances may occur anytime.
Eat crackers - crackers are known to be emulsifier of gastric contents therefore it controls nausea and vomiting and neutralizes gastric contents.
For pregnant clients who are irritable, try to relax and find some time to go to mall. If urinary frequency occurs, there is no need to limit the fluid intake during the day but limit the fluid intake before going to bed because this can disrupt the sleep pattern and causing for severe morning sickness. It is important to eat nutritious foods especially the iron rich foods and calcium rich foods to hold in the development of brain and strong bones of the baby.
Just remember that do not force you to get up when morning sickness occur. Better, have a bedpan at your bedside rather than putting yourself and the baby to danger. For severe nausea and vomiting, better consult a doctor because this can be harmful to the baby and can even lead to cardiac arrest if not well manage.
The pharmacologic medication being prescribed is anti emetic or controls vomiting to save important electrolytes in your body. Several modifications of lifestyle will change especially the diet. The diet is a bland or a clear liquid to decrease vomiting.
Morning sickness is prevented if the client is aware that she is pregnant, if not especially for men there could be something wrong in the gastro intestinal tract.
