Choosing and Caring for Clothes
Before you go on a shopping spree to buy new clothes it is better you keep the following things in mind about price, style, cut, fit, color, material and suitability.
How much you can afford to pay for Clothes
- First make a list of the things you need to buy, starting with your main garment.
- The amount you can afford to spend on your clothes will give you a choice within a certain price range.
- Do not buy an expensive piece of jewelry and then have no money left for buying clothes, which you really need.
Be careful about style, cut and fit
- You will want to look smart and follow the fashion, but remember that simple lines look best and are most comfortable to wear.
- Choose styles which suit your figure and do not draw attention to any faults which you may have. If you have a good figure, you will be able to wear close-fitting styles.
If you are rather large, avoid full gathered skirts, materials with large patterns, and high-waisted styles. Straight jackets and loose-fitting styles will suit you best. If you are thin, choose styles, which will give you more fullness. Full skirts, gathered bodices and patterned materials will help.
What looks best on you
1. You will probably know which colors you like and which suit you the best. It is exciting to wear bright colors, but too many strong colors worn together can spoil a gay outfit.
2. Some colors clash, you may find pink, red and orange flowers used in an all - over design on a cotton print, but never wear an orange duppata or hat with a pink salwar or dress.
3. Choose patterned materials carefully. Avoid too much pattern. If you have a striped blouse or sweater, choose a plain skirt to wear with it, and if your skirt has a checked pattern, wear a plain blouse or sweater. Never wear a patterned coat, jacket or cardigan over a flowered shirt or dress.
Learn to tell good material
Cotton materials should not crease easily. They should be hardwearing and wash well. Woolen materials vary in weight and texture. Dress material made from pure wool is soft and light to wear. Silks also vary in weight and quality. Good quality silk washes and irons easily and hangs well. Man-made or synthetic fibers are produced in many different textures. Nylon woven with wool or cotton makes a hardwearing material, which can be permanently pleated and easily washed.
