JEAN POOL -
Choosing right colour Jeans, pocket size and style make all the difference
Nothing comes between me and my Calvin's," purred Hollywood hottie, Brooke Shields, from billboards all across America in the early eighties. And while traditional Calvin Kleins may be passé today, jeans whether skinny, boot cut or tattered continue to reign the fashion scene.
But just what are the trends in jeans today? Says Mumbai-based designer, Nisha Jamvwal, "Basic blue jeans are a tad passé this season; instead opt for destroyed denim with an intentionally worn, torn and tattered look or the bling look of dark denim with lots of glitz in the form of studs and crystal and sequin embroidery," she reveals. "These days, denim washes are dark or with gray tones with heavy sandblast," she adds. As for silhouettes, Jamvwal says that a slim-fit, tapered-leg look with the hem creating a slight fold as it hits the top of your foot, is trendy.
However, Nikasha Tawade, another wellknown Mumbai designer confesses that, "One can make a stylish statement with even a basic pair of well-fitted denim pants or jeans. Most importantly though, the cut should be the kind that flatters the body," she adds. "Denims with flares are totally out. Concentrate more on wearing the boot-cut styles," she suggests.
As for Pria Kataria Puri, she will have you wear high-waisted drain-pipes if you have that perfect body. But if you're not a perfect ten, Pria suggests low-waisted skinny jeans in slimming colours like dark blue, charcoal and Prussain blue.
Pria Kataria also predicts a trend towards jeans in solid, non-faded colours like gold and silver. Of course, a little bit of antique block-printing on jeans, teamed with embroidered belts, go a long way in making a startling style statement.
CUT-TO-FIT jeans
N o matter what the trends are and what's available in stores, one must wear a pair of jeans that suits their body structure and figure. "For instance, a darker shade or a solid colour pair of denims can make any person look slimmer," says Nikasha. "Slimmer people can try out the washed-effect denims, especially when the washed effect is on the hips; it will make them look smart and classy since the slimmer women have a body to carry it off, whereas it would definitely be a fashion disaster for women with larger hips as it will only accentuate the hips making them look broader," she confides.
Another very important thing to keep in mind, especially while buying jeans or denim pants, is to make sure that the back pockets are higher and towards the centre. "This will give the wearer a slimmer effect incase she has slightly broader hips," says Nikasha.
To slim and shape your buttocks, Nisha Jamvwal recommends jeans with moderate to large pockets. "Even personally, I shy away from jeans with very small back pockets or no pockets at all," she reveals.
As for slim people, Pria Kataria Puri says that, "High-waisted slim-fit jeans with a slight boot-cut style or lowwaisted baggy jeans will look good on a very slim figure. However, a slim person should avoid stretch denims and colours like black and dark blue as it will make one look even skinnier," she adds.
