How to Use Essential Oils, Benefits and uses of Aromatherapy Essential Oils
Aromatherapy Essential Oils can be used in several ways and the treatment is luxurious. First, the oils should be diluted in a neutral carrier oil. To apply neat Essential Oil to skin could cause a burn. You can buy oils ready-diluted, but if you have the concentrated essence, it needs to be mixed in the proportion of 1:5 with a carrier oil such as almond, apricot, hazelnut, groundnut or safflower oil. Always store Essential Oils in tightly capped or stoppered dark-glass bottles in a cool place or in the fridge. Essential Oils are highly volatile, unlike the fatty culinary oils, and will evaporate quickly if exposed to heat, light or air.
How to Use Essential Oils As Therapeutic Massage
The diluted oils can be applied to the face and body and rubbed or massaged into the skin. The base of the spine and the back of the neck are particularly good application points for the relief of nervous tension.
Almond oil nourishes and pampers the skin or aloe vera oil as it helps maintain the skin's moisture balance and activates the skin's self healing power.
You can also inhale directly from the bottle or add one or two drips to a bowl of just-boiled water, bend your head over it and drape a towel over your head and bowl to keep in the steam. This is particularly effective when using peppermint or eucalyptus oil to relieve breathing problems.
Another way to enjoy the essential oils is to add about 10 drops to a hot bath. Make sure that there are no draughts in the bathroom and have a long relaxing soak, inhaling the perfume at the same time.
You can also make ointments and fragrant waters with essential oils. For the ointment, melt over heat one part of beeswax with five parts of carrier oil. Stir well to combine, then allow to cool. Stir in 10 drops of plant essence and store in a tightly sealed jar in a cool place. DO not add the plant oil while the mixture is hot or it will evaporate. For a room or body spray add about five drops of oil to one pint of water. To scent a room you can also add a few drops of oil to a bowl of water near a radiator.
Room Sprays
To make a room spray blend ten drops of essential oil in seven tablespoons of water. One tablespoon of vodka or pure alcohol to the solution will act as a preservative but this is optional. Shake the mixture well before filling the sprayer. Vanilla, peach or lemon oils all work well as natural room sprays.
Pillow Talk
Perfume your with 2-3 drops of oil. Choose a relaxing oil to unwind or one for insomnia if you have sleep problems.
Humidifiers
You can add your favorite oil to the water of a humidifier or improvise by adding five drops of essential oil to a small bowl of water and placing it atop a radiator.
Ring Burners
Use the heat from light bulbs to release perfumed oils. Small ring burners, usually purchased at a craft or specialty store, sit over the top of the bulb. Add a few drops essential oil, and the heat from the bulb will gently vaporize the oil.
Scented Candles
Wax candles can be bought ready-impregnated with essential oils and are a delightful way of scenting a room. Or you can add a few drops of essential oil to an oil lamp for the same effect.
