The precise cause of acne is not known, although hormones play a key role in the appearance of spots.
Acne often starts in teenage years because of this, and can last into the thirties, or longer.
It can also flare up in women of thirty or even forty plus who have never previously suffered, because of a change in hormonal activity. There are circumstances that can aggravate inflammation of the skin in some people:
- a very humid atmosphere
- certain medicines
- insufficient sleep
- pre-menstrual hormone fluctuation
- stress and emotional upsets
- the contraceptive pill
- the link with diet has not been proven, although an unbalanced diet and zinc deficiency may contribute
- certain ingredients in cosmetics maybe a factor.
Precautions and Advice for Acne
Don't use harsh cleansing products or abrasive scrubs as this may increase the skin's oil production and will also dry the surface of the skin.
Never pick at or squeeze spots - this pushes inflammation deeper into the skin and causes permanent damage.
Salon facials and professional removal of blackheads are beneficial.
Using clay masks at home absorbs excess oil.
Contact your doctor if the problem is severe. One form of acne can pit and scar the skin. This can be avoided with specialist treatment. But if you just have the odd spot, the best advice is to leave well alone and don't worry!
